Criminal violence has had far-reaching and detrimental impacts on Mexico. Despite the government’s attempts to build a new image using an ambitious package of economic reforms, any progress has been hindered by armed clashes, high-profile prison escapes and the criminal infiltration of institutions.

While homicide numbers have dropped in recent years, criminal groups have become more audacious in their attacks against government targets. The energy sector in particular, having recently opened for foreign investment, has been severely affected by violence and theft.

This discussion analyses the current state of criminal threats and Mexico’s institutional fragility, as well as the government’s anti-crime strategy.
