Mexico's consumer confidence weakened for a second straight month in August to its lowest level in six months, survey figures from the statistical office INEGI showed Friday.

The consumer confidence index dropped to 90.4 from 92.2 in July. Economists had expected the index to remain unchanged at July's level. The latest reading was the lowest level since February's 90.3.

Households' view on their current economic situation weakened in August after rising in the previous two months. The relevant index dropped to 98.6 from 99.4.

Their expectations on their economic situation in 12 months deteriorated for a second straight month. The index fell to 98.5 from 98.7.

Consumers were also more pessimistic regarding the country's present economic situation. The corresponding measure dropped to 84.2 from 88.5.

Similarly, the index reflecting their view on the country's economic situation tumbled to 85.1 from 89.2.
