Official Reports on Deaths in Police Operation in January Contradict Government Version Aristegui Noticias

After the death of civilians during a federal police operation last January 6 in Apatzingán, Michoacán, the authorities compiled reports that contradict the official version that the deaths were the result of suspected friendly fire or of a confrontation [provoked by the victims], an investigation by Univision reports.

An unpublished record of the preliminary investigation by the Attorney General's Office, obtained by Univision Research, presents new evidence that the victims may have been shot down by government security forces while fleeing the scene or they were already on the ground.

Fernando Elzaurdia the expert who analyzed the document, said that "there were too many shots and shots are in regions (of the body) not common in a confrontation."

The evidence is contained in a "followup record of relevant matters" of the PGR, dated April 28, a copy of which was forwarded to the office of Attorney General Arely Gomez.

Some of the dead had been shot in the back, the back of the head and buttocks. The expert believes that the victims "were not facing", "but had their backs" [to the police].

The videos from nearby security cameras and a cellphone recorded by one of the survivors coincide with this explanation. In them one sees a group of people getting down from a truck, armed with stones and sticks. Within seconds, they come back, running for cover when the shots begin to ring.
