An Unsurprising Poll Finds Pessimism About Mexico's New Congress El Daily Post

Mexicans have low expectations for the kind of work that the new Chamber of Deputies will be doing for the next three years. The majority opinion in a new survey by the Mexican polling firm Parametría is that the new Congress won’t be any better than the last one, which was lowly regarded.

“There exists a strong rejection and dissatisfaction with the work done by legislators,” Parametría said. “We should be clear that this is a phenomenon that is not exclusive to Mexico, but is also seen in developed democracies, such as the United States.”

Expectations for the incoming legislators were so low that only 20 percent of respondents said it will be better than the last Congress, which served from September of 2012 until the end of August.

The Senate remains with the same members until 2018.

Interestingly, the majority that doesn’t foresee any improvement in the new Chamber is split down the middle, with 28 percent thinking it will be about the same and 28 percent assuming it will be worse.
