Rafael - A Journey of the Heart (Compassion Without Borders)

Rafael, an emaciated horse nearly worked to death pulling a decrepit, overloaded cart through the streets of Juarez, Mexico, is due to arrive at the Center for Animal Protection & Education (CAPE) Animal Sanctuary in Grass Valley, California on Sunday, September 27.

Rafael had fallen to his knees while harnessed to an overloaded cart. He was unable stand, yet his owner continued to beat him. The police were called by a good samaritan who paid $200 to buy Rafael his freedom.

Removing the harness from Rafael took close to an hour as it was convoluted and clearly had been left on the horse for months, possibly years. He was covered in sores and wounds from both the beatings and the harness.

Collaborating with Compassion Without Borders, CAPE worked to raise money for Rafael’s transportation costs, and to raise awareness about the inhumane living standards of millions of animals around the world forced to carry heavy loads. The Donkey Sanctuary in the United Kingdom has harness experts in Mexico who will work with CAPE in a larger effort to help more horses like Rafael.

...Since his rescue in Juarez, Rafael has been under a veterinarian’s care and is now well enough to make the journey to his new home in Grass Valley.
