Mexico Government Is Going Wildly Over-Budget on Secret Security Operations El Daily Post

Through May of 2015 Mexico’s federal government has spent 4.728 billion pesos on secret security operations, more than seven times the amount budgeted by Congress for the entire year.

Those over-budget expenditures are unsupervised and secret, as allowed by law for “urgent” security operations aimed at capturing criminals, uncovering money-laundering operations or paying informants.

The 4.728 billion pesos spent on these confidential operations in less than half the year — by the Interior (Gobernación) Secretariat, the Federal Attorney General’s Office (PGR) and the military — dwarfs the budgeted amount of 560 million pesos for the entire year. That’s an increase of 740 percent.

The bulk of the cost overrun comes from Gobernación, the secretariat that includes the major federal security and anti-crime agencies. Before June it had already spent 4.18 billion pesos on secret security operations, almost 4 billion more pesos more than the 185 million pesos budgeted for the entire year — a whopping increase of more than 2,000 percent.
