Support of Mexico's Political Parties Is Most Generous of Latin American Countries Claudia Herrera Beltran - La Jornada

Mexico is the "most generous" country in Latin America in supporting political parties and places fifth in a group of 25 economies, including several advanced ones.

Presented this month in Mexico, the study "The Cost of Democracy: Notes About Political Funding in Latin America", states that our country allocated US$3 per voter, which places it below Austria, France, Sweden and Israel.

However, another report from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, whose figures are more recent and focused on Latin America, states that Mexico spends US$17.24 per voter, 18 times greater than the regional average.

Daniel Zovatto, co-author of the first investigation and director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), explains to La Jornada that even though those figures are based on past studies (going back to 2006), "Mexico is by far the country that allocates the most resources to public funding," then adds that "In Mexico's case, not only the public funding to campaigns needs to be added up, but also what is given to political parties for operations in non-election years, plus what amounts to free access to the mass media."
