Enrique Peña Nieto Brags About Mexico's Human-Rights Legislation at UN General Assembly (AJ+)

Just after an emotional and poignant weekend for his country, Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto spoke to the U.N. General Assembly Monday, expressing his government’s respect for human rights.

“Mexico is a nation fully committed to human rights, law and peace,” he said in his relatively short speech, claiming that the upcoming visit by the U.N. human rights envoy is a demonstration of his government’s willingness to cooperate when it comes to human rights.

He said people deserve to live in socities where there is “Respect for migrants, respect for women, respect for all races and religions … but above all, respect for human dignity,” but acknowledged there was a problem with trust, which he said needs to be restored.

Peña Nieto’s comments may have stung for the scores of Mexicans who have participated in mass demonstrations over the past year to draw the world’s attention to issues with human rights in the country.
