A trip aboard the Nautilus Explorer, September 16-21 2015 (John Lopinot)

"It's like being a couple of feet away from a dinosaur trying to eat you. Most incredible wildlife encounter we have ever had," say John and Susan Lopinot.

There are two cages you can access from the stern of the boat. Two more cages (certified divers only) descend by winches, one to 18 feet deep, the other 40 feet. All cages had surface-supplied air and the deeper ones have a dive master, usually on top of the cage.

Each diver got three trips in the deep cages each day, at 45 minutes a dive. Water was about 72ºF and we wore 7 millimeter hoods, suits and booties - and 40+ pounds of weight to keep our feet on the floor of the cages.
