US Delays Computer Judicial Aid Program to Mexico The Associated Press

The U.S. Embassy says it is cancelling a planned delivery of computer systems to Mexico to aid that country's judicial reform in order to re-design the package.

The embassy said the U.S. government continues to support Mexico's effort to move from closed, written court proceedings to oral trials and a system that puts the burden of proof on prosecutors. The 2008 constitutional reform has yet to be implemented in most of Mexico.

The embassy said Monday the package of software and hardware will be "substituted by a new version that will give the Mexican government more efficiency, more territorial coverage and greater flexibility."

The aid is part of the Merida Initiative, under which the U.S. has given Mexico $1.4 billion so far in equipment and training.
