Mexico vs USA Highlights (CONCACAF)

For four agonizing years and six frustrating games, Mexico had failed to beat their detestable American arch-rivals at their national sport. But on Saturday night, they were victorious in the matchup that mattered more than any of the ones before it, in a 3-2 thriller won in the 118th minute, amid the deafening din of a packed Rose Bowl.

In a thoroughly entertaining affair in front of 93,723 spectators – the second-biggest crowd in U.S. national team history – on a sweltering night in the Rose Bowl, Javier Hernandez, Geoff Cameron, Oribe Peralta and Bobby Wood exchanged goals, before Paul Aguilar won it for El Tri in extra time.

With the win, Mexico secured a berth in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia, a sort of dry run for the World Cup there the following summer. Participation offers the reward of familiarity with their surroundings once the big tournament rolls around, not to mention a rare and stern test against some of the world's best teams. The Americans would very much liked to have had that edge. Mexico will have it instead.

...Following a difficult period, in which Mexico barely squeaked into the World Cup and cycled through five managers in just two years, its crisis is now over. With the Gold Cup reclaimed in July – thanks in part to the Americans getting upset by Jamaica in the semifinals – and interim manager Ricardo "Tuca” Ferretti claiming this one-off playoff in succession, order has been restored.
