The Femicide Crisis in the State of Mexico: VICE News investigates the murder of women in the region, and meets relatives of the victims who continue to fight for justice, from authorities who seem incapable or unwilling to help. (VICE News)

The governor of Mexico’s most populous entity recently tried to downplay his state’s shocking incidence of femicide by citing statistics supposedly showing a lower rate there than the national average.

But for The Bloodhound, that statement didn’t pass the sniff test. And sure enough, it turns out that the governor's numbers are not only unconfirmed, but of little use in the real world.

The statement: “The State of Mexico does not have the highest incidence of femicides per 100,000 residents . . . We are very much below the national average.”

Date and place: A message delivered by the governor during the July 9 signing ceremony of the Equal Opportunity Agreement between the state government and the federal women’s advocacy agency Inmujeres.

The verdict: Misleading
