Mexico's dissident teachers' movement held a one-day national strike and took to the streets in mass protests yesterday against the government's educational reform. (teleSUR English)

Teachers opposed to proposed Mexican education reforms took part in a 24-hour strike on Monday, called by the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), with marches and occupations staged across the country.

In Mexico City, teachers and their supporters - including family members of the 43 missing Iguala students - marched to the Secretariat of Public Education to reject the reforms, while other largely peaceful protests took place in Oaxaca, Chiapas, Michoacán and Guerrero, where protesters occupied the offices of the Education Secretariat.

In Tabasco, riot police used tear gas to disperse a group teachers blocking a motorway toll booth. Mexico’s federal police chief vowed to use “rational force” wherever needed.
