Two Chicago teens dedicated a powerful poem to Ayotzinapa’s missing 43 and say the struggle of Mexicans against state violence is global.
Julio Cesar has been declared dead
but he has not been burned alive
like the government had sworn our 43 had been
instead they find his face stripped of flesh
a decaying red mask of a martyr of revolution
The above is an excerpt of a stunning poem written by junior high school students and cousins Vania Gutierrez and Sejahari Saulter-Villegas living in Chicago’s West side. The two are part of the Chicago-based Kuumba Lynx organization, which focuses on youth development and hip hop arts.
teleSUR spoke with two young poets about what inspired them to honor the stories of the 43 disappeared students from the Ayotzinapa teacher training school in Guerrero, Mexico.
