Everyone a Winner with TPP: Mexico's Pena Nieto Nikkei Asian Review

The Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement will provide "great opportunities" for all the participating economies, as well as help Mexico expand its trade relations with Asia, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto told The Nikkei in a recent interview.

Q: Twelve Pacific Rim nations have struck a deal on the TPP. How will it change the world economy? What kind of economic benefits is the accord likely to bring to Mexico?

A: It took a very long time to negotiate the TPP. It has been a long-awaited deal. The TPP will create great opportunities for all signatory nations that will be integrated. The participating countries account for 40% of the world's total gross domestic product. The pact will allow Mexico to diversify its trade and economic relations, opening up a new horizon and giving much impetus to economic integration. It is a very important trade accord and produces a lot of benefits that will help promote the economic development of the region. All participating countries will be winners and benefit from the agreement. It will greatly stimulate trade and investment. It will also improve productivity and competitiveness.

Q: Foreign countries are concerned about public safety in Mexico. How are you dealing with this problem?

A: The deterioration in public safety was worst in 2011. The crime rate has been declining since 2012, when I became president. I am continuing my efforts to make this country safe. But in certain areas of Mexico, violence sometimes breaks out. We intend to deal with the matter seriously. I fully understand that [improved safety] will make Mexico more attractive as an investment target.
