The leader of the Sinaloa cartel illegally possessed a television in his cell with a GPS tracker inside so the tunnel could be built with precision.

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman's accomplices knew where the world's most wanted and powerful drug lord was at all times because he had television in his cell that has a GPS tracking device inside of it, according to La Jornada.

“The electronic device which was discovered in Guzman's cell was analyzed by forensic experts of the PGR (attorney general's office),” the left-leaning newspaper said.

Prison officials seized all electronic devices from all the cells inside the maximum security jail in Toluca – about 30 miles north of Mexico City – after El Chapo's escape through a mile-long tunnel July 11.

The GPS would explain why El Chapo's associates were able to precisely excavate a tunnel into his cell.

Against maximum security jail regulations in Mexico, El Chapo was allowed to have the television in his cell as well as thousands of documents relating to his trials, which he also used to send messages back and forth with his lawyers and numerous conyugal visits by different “lovers,” La Jornada added.
