Forced disappearances in Mexico are widespread, with 25,000 reported cases in the past nine years, and its perpetrators enjoy impunity. The forced disappearance of the 43 Ayotzinapa students has increased international and national pressure on the Mexican government to address the problem.
The executive branch has sent a bill to the Senate that would make it a federal crime punishable by 30 to 100 years in prison.
