Giant, colorful papier-mache creatures known as "alebrijes" filled the streets of Mexico City on Saturday for an annual parade that drew hundreds of people.
Celebrating its ninth edition, the parade showed the work of Mexican artisans from across the country who spend weeks, sometimes months, creating sculptures that depict fictional animals.
The Oaxacan-Mexican fantasy sculptures were conceived by Mexican artist Pedro Linares in the 1930s.
During an illness, he had dreams of fantastical creatures, many of them mixtures of known animals, which shouted the word "Alebrijes, Alebrijes" at him.
