Mexican consulate officials in Douglas monitoring an incident in which a Border Patrol agent near Naco fired into Mexico say use of force in immigration control efforts should be a last resort.

The agent was patrolling the fence on Monday when he apprehended a man walking north from the fence who had been spotted by camera operators, the Border Patrol has said.

While he was making the arrest, the agent said he saw another person in Mexico point what he thought was a gun and the agent fired his weapon.

Mexican authorities, Border Patrol agents and aircraft from CBP’s Air and Marine Operations searched the area but no one was found, Border Patrol officials have said.
