Government Rejects Being Unilaterally Judged by US on Human Rights in Mexico La Jornada

The Mexican government rejected any unilateral practice judging the human rights situation in the country, after the United States retained part of the Merida Initiative funds subject to progress in this area.

The Secretarirat of Foreign Relations said:

"Mexico's government recognizes and acknowledges the current challenges facing the country's human rights, and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the protection and promotion of the same."

The US Congress appropriated $148 million to Mexico for 2015 as part of the multi-year program launched in 2008 to support equipment and training to combat criminal organizations. But this time it retained $5 million, 15 percent of which corresponds to the security forces. The reason was that the State Department declined to submit to Congress a report, required to release the funds, which credited progress on human rights in Mexico.
