Mexico’s Electoral Tribunal has overturned the June 7 election for governor of the western state of Colima and ordered a new ballot.
The tribunal said it decided to act “after verifying the violation of the fundamental principles of fairness and neutrality in the contest as a result of undue intervention from state government officials.”
The effect of the ruling was to nullify the triumph of Jose Ignacio Peralta Sanchez, candidate of a coalition led by the nationally ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI.
A majority of the judges ruled that there was a demonstrated “undue and illegal intervention” in the election by Rigoberto Salazar Velasco, Colima secretary for Social Development, and state Attorney General Marcos Santana Montes.
