“Everyday there’s a disappearance, a murder, or a rape,” Silvana Ornelas, a 20-year-old activist who works for a group called Solidaridad por las Familias (Solidarity with the Families) told me.

In a recent article for The Guardian Nina Lakhani explained, “A staggering 1,258 girls and women were reported disappeared in [Estado de Mexico] in 2011 and 2012 – of whom 53% were aged between 10 and 17, according to figures obtained by the National Citizens Observatory on Femicides. Over the same period, 448 women were murdered in the state.” In the mid 1990s a similar string of murders occurred in Ciudad Juarez, attracting international news crews, catalyzed broad reflections on Mexico’s economic growth strategy that encouraged people to move from the countryside to the city to look for work, and inspired the production of a number of documentaries and movies.

In Estado de Mexico on the outskirts of Mexico City, the problem today is worse than what happened two decades earlier in Ciudad Juarez but somehow in the context of Mexico’s of the brutal violent crime plaguing many parts of the country, the attacks aren’t attracting much attention or becoming an important part of the international debate about Mexico’s current state of affairs.

In a recent article for Fusion I explained, “almost every day a woman’s body is found dumped on the side of the road or in one of the dirty canals outside the city. Mexico State is now known as the most dangerous in the country for women.”
