Mexico’s interior minister, Angel Osorio Chong, announced Wednesday a new security plan for one of its most deadly regions, Guerrero state, which will include the deployment of 1,500 additional military forces.

The new security initiative includes the proposal to launch a new anti-kidnapping unit, as well as the construction of a highway linking the Costa Grande with the volatile Tierra Caliente region of Michoacan, Guerrero, and parts of neighboring states Colima and Jalisco.

The highway will help stimulate economic development and reduce insecurity, Minister Osorio said during the inauguration ceremony of Guerrero’s newly elected governor, Hector Astudillo.

"We want to return peace to Mexicans from the state of Guerrero. For this reason we are announcing the launch of a new security strategy in Guerrero,” Chong stated from the Mexican city of Acapulco.

According to recent figures released by the Mexican government, Guerrero ranked as the state with the second highest number of murders from January–August 2015.

Guerrero is considered to be on of the least governable territories in Mexico and arguably in the entire Western Hemisphere. Official figures show that the state ranked fourth in terms of homicides and kidnappings in 2014 with a murder rate of 42.69 victims per 100,000 inhabitants and 110 reported kidnappings.
