Dreamworks has been given the green light for their new theme park in Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

Work on the park is set to begin next year in the area of Punta Maroma, with an initial investment of US $800 million. Dario Flota Ocampo, director of the Trust for Tourism Promotion of the Riviera Maya, said that the park will be the first of its kind in Latin America and will generate significant revenues and tourist numbers.

While the park waits for final permits, plans for Dreamworks’ Riviera Maya theme will be similar to the Dreamworks park outside New York, with rides, theaters, restaurants, shopping and water attractions heightened by Dreamworks characters such as Shrek, Puss ‘n Boots, Shark Tale and Antz.

The new park, which will differ greatly from other local parks such as Xel-He and Xcaret, will be constructed on 7.5 hectares of land. It’s anticipated that once the park is complete, more tourists from South America will visit the Riviera Maya, bypassing the United States.
