Ciudad Juárez is without a doubt, one of the most dangerous cities in Mexico. In 2010, the city was named the world capital of murders with 8.5 homicides happening per day according to CNN Mexico. In 2015, sources reported a decrease in violence, a bright future for the city in general, and the launch of a marketing campaign, “Juárez Te Espera,” intended to bring tourism back into town.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Valle de Juárez, Chihuahua, a town located near the U.S. border where unsolved murders of hundreds of Mexican women have taken place over the years, and where José Luis Rodríguez Muñiz was shot to death hours after expressing his personal opinion about the local government.
According to several publications, the 31-year-old was an activist involved in different groups in charge of the protection of children and women who have been victims of violence. He was also had an opinion focus group called “Un Programa Piloto,” in which he would discuss different actual subjects with his friends on camera.
In the video that allegedly caused Rodríguez Muñiz’ death, he criticizes Chihuahua's Governor César Duarte Jáquez, Mayor Enrique Serrano, candidate Héctor Munguía Lardizábal and other politicians whom he refers to as “bola de ratas.” Although authorities are still investigating the happenings, reports indicate that not having “pelos en la lengua” is most likely to be the reason behind his murder.
