It only took nine months for 2015 to become the deadliest year for journalists since Enrique Peña Nieto was sworn in.

This alarming information is documented by the human rights group Article 19 in its latest report on Mexico (“Threats to communication now an epidemic”) released on Thursday. The report recounts the seven murders of journalists since January, including three that took place in July alone: Juan Mendoza (July 1 in Veracruz); Filadelfo Sánchez (July 2 in Oaxaca); and Rubén Espinosa (July 31 in Mexico City).

The total of seven murdered journalists surpasses the five slain in 2014 and the four that were killed in 2013. The other four reporters cut down this year are Moisés Sánchez, and Armando Saldaña in Veracruz, Abel Bautista in Oaxaca and Gerardo Nieto in Guanajuato.

Article 19 also takes note of the murder of Alfonso Solana Tierrablanca, a newspaper vendor employed by El Diario de la Tarde in Iguala, Guerrero, highlighting the face that “he worked for a newspaper in an ‘at-risk’ position.”
