How Corrupt Is Mexico? (TestTube News)

Mexico is in 36th position among 43 countries evaluated in the 2015 Global Competitiveness Index (ICI). Despite the fact that it advanced one position on the list since 2011, it remains one of the last in terms of rule of law and combating corruption.

The Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) released statement that Mexico is only ahead of seven countries in the ICI 2015: Argentina, Russia, Colombia, Indonesia, India, Guatemala and Nigeria, in descending order.

"Our country is among the last ten places and a significant backwardness remains," said Imco.

The most important reason for the country's lag, according to the institute,

"is in the subindex evaluating the rule of law, which assesses the existence of clear rules, legal certainty, public security and corruption. In this subindex, Mexico is located at position 40, only ahead of Colombia, Nigeria and Guatemala."

Other factors that keep Mexico in one of the last positions of the International Competitiveness Index are:

"rising costs of crime, intentional homicide rate, insufficient protection of creditors, lack of confidence in the police and the fight against piracy," said the institute.

Furthermore, there are the factors of

"increased expenditure on health by Mexican families, a drop in vaccination coverage, lower levels of knowledge of English and economic inequality."
