Fault Lines travels to Texas to investigate why some women are taking abortion into their own hands. (Al Jazeera English)

New research from the Texas Policy Evaluation Project (TxPEP) reveals that up to 240,000 Texas women may have attempted to end a pregnancy on their own, without medical assistance (read more here and here). This research comes as clinics across the state have been forced to close.

Approximately 20 health centers have already closed across Texas following passage of abortion restrictions in 2013. If the Supreme Court allows all of the 2013 restrictions to go into full effect, the 5.4 million women of reproductive age in Texas will be left with only 10 health centers that provide safe, legal abortion in the entire state — down from approximately 40 health centers before passage of this dangerous law.

Last Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it will review a Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals decision upholding the Texas law — which is partially blocked for now.
