Mexico announced it has two million more poor people than it had in 2012, while the nation's politicians revel in wealth. (Al Jazeera America)

In Mexico, 11.4 million people survive in abject poverty today, admitted the Secretary (Minister) of Social Development, Jose Antonio Meade. He said the figure is set to the methodology of the National Council Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL).

Meade assured that of this population, the National Crusade Against Hunger serves and helps 7.1 million people in 1,000 municipalities.

However, due to budget cuts next year, increasing attention to more people served by this strategy will not be possible.
