Will we see Arturo Escobar Vega behind bars? Dissimulation is a serious problem in Mexico and a practice which has been widespread in government, particularly during the reign of Enrique Peña Nieto.

Peña Nieto’s dissimulation strategy is to make it seem as if he's doing something. For example, the Attorney General’s Office, through the Specialized Prosecutor for Electoral Crimes, announces that it has petitioned the court for an arrest warrant against the former coordinator of the congressional caucus of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico in the Chamber of Deputies and national spokesperson of the Green Ecologist Party.

Escobar Vega says,

"to date, I have not been summoned by any judicial authority. I repudiate the charges against me, and I express my full confidence that the facts will be clarified and will confirm my innocence."

Doesn’t it look like a show put on by the Attorney General’s Office and the Specialized Prosecutor for Electoral Crimes by order of Peña Nieto? Wouldn’t it be better to detain the alleged culprit without announcing the arrest warrant? Or was the announcement made in order to give him time to flee, as so many politicians have fled to avoid prosecution for their alleged crimes?

It is absolutely to be expected that this man will never be behind bars. Any well-informed citizen can analyze this as another government dissimulation, another set-up to make us believe that we live under the rule of law.

If we truly lived under the rule of law, the Secretary of Government Relations, Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong, would not have appointed Escobar Vega Undersecretary for Crime Prevention and Citizen Participation. When he did, there was widespread criticism, warning that Escobar Vega was a suspected electoral criminal. Didn’t Osorio Chong know about Escobar Vega’s alleged criminal past?
