Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan just made a huge announcement: They plan to donate 99% of their Facebook shares to charity. (Facebook)
Despite living in a time of extreme wealth and income inequality, things aren't all bad. With CEOs and other bajillionaires pledging to use their wealth to improve the human condition, the future may not be as bleak as it seems. Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan just became the latest insanely rich people to promise to leave the world a better place than they found it, in their case in the form of donating 99% of their Facebook shares to charitable foundations.
A very long letter written to their infant daughter posted to Facebook (where else?) can be summed thusly: Things are better than they've ever been, but many things are still bad, and as parents to you we have an obligation to do what we can to change that. Towards the end, they dropped the bombshell: Over the course of their lives, they'll pledge 99% of their shares in Facebook to that end, currently valued at about $45 billion dollars.
They've also set up a page called the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, presumably the vehicle through which they'll use their Facebook money to make a positive impact. It's not especially clear what this is or how it will work — the page simply re-purposes part of the letter to their daughter, and also claims its mission is to "Advance human potential and promote equality in areas such as health, education, scientific research, and energy."
