Sister Norma Pimentel's generosity has no borders. In McAllen, Texas, where the nun lives, she has helped more than 20,000 immigrants through the welcome center she runs at Sacred Heart Church. Her charity work is so notable it has earned the admiration of Pope Francis himself.

Earlier in the year, Pimentel was told that because of his demanding schedule, the pope would not see her on his virtual tour, but then he broke with his schedule to ask to speak with her.

...When the immigrant population in her part of Texas began to surge in 2014, Pimentel set up two air-conditioned tents to provide temporary food and shelter for those being released from detention centers. The center's intention was to help people who had nowhere to go while waiting for transportation back to Mexico. "They needed a bath, they needed to eat, they needed to rest, they needed a doctor,” Pimentel told Texas Monthly.

Pimentel estimates that about 100 people visit the center each day. Global Sisters Report quotes Mayra Garza as saying of Pimentel (in Spanish), "She's a super person, super brave and strong," Garza said in Spanish. "Not everyone would make the decision to help when so many people are opposed [to immigration]."
