Natural childbirth makes a comeback in Mexico (Al Jazeera English)

Of the 130 million women who give birth each year worldwide, 303,000 die during childbirth, the World Health Organization, or WHO, warned on Friday.

The international organization pointed out that there are 2.6 million cases of stillbirth, in addition to another 2.7 million deaths within the first 28 days of birth.

"Worldwide, the majority of maternal and newborn deaths occur around the time of birth, typically within the first 24 hours after childbirth," the WHO statement explained, adding that most of these deaths are "preventable."

Therefore the international organization has launched a new "Safe Childbirth Checklist and Implementation Guide" highlighting the major complications that can arise, ending with the death of the mother or baby, such as "post-partum hemorrhage, infection, obstructed labor, preeclampsia and birth asphyxia."

WHO hopes that this guide can "help health care workers follow the essential care standards for every birth."
