Two Mexican brothers of Spanish Basque descent have channeled their passion for speed into the development of the Latin American country’s first ultra-lightweight, high-performance car for export – a two-seater that resembles a race car but has been adapted for normal driving conditions.

The Vuhl 05 weighs just 695 kilograms (1,530 pounds) and can reach a top speed of 245 kilometers (152 miles) per hour. It boasts a 285-horsepower Ford Turbo EcoBoost DOHC 4-cylinder engine and a 6-speed manual transmission and can zoom from zero to 60 in just 3.45 seconds. The vehicle also offers unparalleled passenger safety and complies with European driving regulations.

“We invested three years in planning and developing a car made for the global market,” 34-year-old Guillermo Echeverria Jr., an industrial designer who is the older of the two brothers, said in an interview with EFE Friday in the central Mexican city of Queretaro, the location of the plant where the prototype was manufactured.

That facility is part of the Queretaro Aerospace Cluster, which has attracted multinational companies such as Safran, Airbus, Delta and Bombardier.
