Speaking at the conference “Costs of Gender Violence in Labor Markets” held at the Department of Economics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico [UNAM], Audrey Rodríguez Elizalde, a researcher in the Department, described workplace violence like this:

“The different types of violence against women in the workplace can be counterproductive for a company, as they create low productivity, instability in the work environment and loss of social prestige for the company.”

The specialist added that between 29 and 42 percent of female workers in the country come face to face with some level of violence at their jobs. The most common forms of aggression against women in the workplace are: discrimination, workplace harassment (known as mobbing) and sexual harassment. This practice comes from the family, community and school. Rodríguez Elizalde regretted that:

"It is becoming increasingly common at work, where now we no longer see it as an act of aggression, but as part of our customs."

Rodríguez Elizalde showed that the majority of victims of attacks are divorced and widowed women (lodged 25 percent of complaints), followed by single women (lodged 23 percent of complaints). The expert added that violence against women varies by sector:

   • Factories: 42 percent;
   • Private companies: 31 percent; and
   • Public institutions: 29 percent.
