A look at Enrique Pena Nieto's Mexico (CCTV America)

The President has passed the halfway point of his six-year term. The assessment cannot be argued: we are not getting better with Peña Nieto.

For the critics: Enrique Peña Nieto’s government is that of Tlatlaya [Army extrajudicial execution of supposed criminals who had surrendered], Ayotzinapa [killing of three and disappearance of 43 normal school students], the escape of “El Chapo” Guzmán and the “white house” [of President's wife, built and finanaced by Higa Group, government contractor]. For the PRI [Party of the Institutional Revolution] and almost all of the opposition, the argument is that sooner or later we will have to see the transforming effects of the reforms.

As Jesús Silva-Herzog pointed out in his latest article: we have to judge the facts and the discourse, Peña Nieto is betting on his plan’s effectiveness. The rest of it, everything outside, doesn’t matter to him. Here is his gravest error.

That’s why is it no surprise that signs of his popularity are almost non-existent and that the majority of Mexicans give his management a failing grade.

That’s why - be careful, the message is also for the parties - the independent options like Jaime Rodríguez [independent governor of Nuevo Leon] and Manuel Clouthier [independent federal deputy] are starting to come onto the electoral scene (according to the survey by Reforma) when there are still three years left until the next presidential election.
