Sister Consuelo Morales on Crusading Against Mexican Cartels, Corrupt Police (Democracy Now!)

Sister Consuelo Morales, founder of Citizens in Support of Human Rights (CADHAC), last week had the honor of recieving the National Human Rights Award. She was given the accolade in recognition of her efforts in trying to find “the disappeared” in the state of Nuevo Leon. Over the years the number of people disappearing has been rising by the thousands and it cannot be ignored any longer. We can and should find them.

It is essential that what is happening in Nuevo Leon [Monterrey is the capital city] is understood, recognized and replicated at a national level.

The combined efforts of Sister Consuela, her organization, the organized families, the special consultants and the actions of state prosecutor Adrian de la Garza, all managed to unveil the key aspects of the phenomenon, its nature and the operational guidelines of the different key actors. The impetus provided by Javier Sicilia’s Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity proved a fundamental spark in triggering organizations and families nationwide, and particularly in Nuevo Leon, to act.

They ascertained, for example, that there was a link between Police torture and the disappeared in Nuevo Leon. They also discovered that the Police had been penetrated and that some government agents even played a part in the disappearances. They discovered as well that an immediate reaction to a disappearance was crucial.
