Mexico Contributes Eight Soldiers to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations Agencia EFE

Eight soldiers will join the U.N. peacekeeping operations in Haiti, the Western Sahara and Lebanon this month, bringing to 12 the number of armed forces personnel deployed on these types of missions, the Mexican government said.

"These servicemen, who belong to the Mexican armed forces, will be deployed this month for periods of between six and 12 months," the Defense Secretariat and the Foreign Relations Secretariat said in a joint statement.

The eight soldiers will join the U.N. Stabilization Mission for Haiti, or Minustah, the U.N. Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, known as Minurso, and the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL.

The deployments "continue the gradual process of Mexico's incorporation into the peacekeeping operations of the United Nations Organization," the secretariats said.
