From San Diego to Boston and from Anchorage, Alaska, to Miami, seven Mexican drug cartels have established almost complete control of drug trafficking across the continental United States.

The Mexicans have enlisted the assistance of more than 20 street gangs while keeping in place a network of intermediaries. Their distributors feature senior citizens as drivers to help escape detection by authorities.

That is the story told in the 2015 National Drug Threat Assessment report compiled by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Mexican cartels are described as having “no rivals” capable of moving and distributing at least four different schedules of controlled substances. And this is despite the best efforts of authorities on both sides of the border desperately trying to crack down on drug trafficking.

The Executive Summary of the report includes the following:

“Mexican transnational criminal organizations (TCOs) remain the greatest criminal drug threat to the United States; no other group can challenge them in the near term. These Mexican poly-drug organizations traffic heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana throughout the United States, using established transportation routes and distribution networks.”
