U.S. Treasury officials have announced sanctions against a Mexican businessman and two newspapers controlled by his family, claiming they are linked to narcotics traffickers.

Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control accused Naim Libien Tella of assisting the activities of the Los Cuinis gang, which this year has engaged in fierce battles with Mexican security forces.

Treasury alleges that through Mr. Libien Tella, the Los Cuinis gang used the Mexico City newspaper Uno Más Uno " to further its drug trafficking activities." U.S. officials didn't elaborate on how either Mr. Libien Tella or the newspapers might have aided the gang but noted in a statement that he has been a longtime associate of alleged gang boss Abigael Gonzalez Valencia.

Mr. Gonzalez Valencia, who was arrested in February and designated by Treasury as a kingpin in April, awaits extradition to face U.S. federal charges.

A Treasury spokeswoman and U.S. Embassy officials declined to provide further details on the allegations against Mr. Libien Tella.

In a statement posted on Uno Mas Uno's website and on social media Wednesday, Mr. Libien Tella, 45 years old, denied any connection Los Cuinis and offered to cooperate with a fuller U.S. and Mexican investigation into his company and himself. He suggested that U.S. investigators were led astray by Mexican counterparts with political or financial motives to hurt himself and the family's business.
