Southwest Mexico Residents Take on Armed Gangs to Prevent Illegal Logging (Al Jazeera)

Organized criminal gangs have helped make Mexico one of the worst victims of deforestation in the world. However, a small community is now taking on illegal loggers who used to be supported by gangs to protect their trees.

Risking their lives, the residents of Cheran, in southwest Mexico, are attempting to repair the damage to their forests caused by illegal loggers by planting new trees.

A few years ago, if they even entered the forest, the armed gangs who protect the loggers would be waiting. Then the community attacked the loggers trucks and forced out the gangs.
