Former Mexican attorney general Jesús Murillo Karam sent a letter to Mexican media denying allegations made in a federal lawsuit filed last week in San Antonio.

Ernesto Karam Garcia and Miguel Angel Leyva Urquia, both of whom have residences in San Antonio, and Salvador Rio De La Loza Postigo, who lives in Florida, allege in a federal lawsuit that a U.S. investment management company gave Murillo a free penthouse unit in a resort development in Mexico. In exchange, according to their lawsuit, Murillo asked U.S. officials to help track the men down in this country.

In his letter, Murillo said he bought the condo unit in 2009, three years before he took office as Mexico’s attorney general, and that Karam, Leyva and Rio De La Loza all signed the contract.

In their lawsuit, the three businessmen alleged that a complicated deal with Clarion Partners LLC, a New-York based real estate investment management firm, to develop a resort in 2007 went bad, resulting in them losing their stake in the property. In their lawsuit, they accuse Clarion Partners and several company officers and employees of fraud and racketeering.

A spokesman for Clarion Partners denied the allegations and said the men had moved to a U.S. court after losing their legal challenges in Mexico.
