Consumer Organization Demands Removal of Coca Cola Ads in Mexico Citys Zocalo Proceso

The organization Consumer Power has demanded the government of the Federal District [Mexico City] withdraw Coca Cola advertising from the Christmas tree placed in the Zócalo.

The organization argues that Mexico City has one of the highest incidences of diabetes in the world, with 13.9 percent of the adult population diagnosed with this disease. Therefore, they note that it is an inconsistency by the authorities to promote the soft drink brand.

"The inconsistency in the public policy of this city is profound, considering the high rates of diabetes and the agreement made with the soft drink company to install its Christmas tree in the central plaza of the country," explains Consumer Power in a statement.

Installing the Christmas tree promoted by Coca Cola violates the initiative of the "Cities Changing Diabetes" presented by the government of the Federal District on December 16. Consumer Power adds that allowing Coca-Cola to install the Christmas tree involves "a deep inconsistency and irresponsibility" of the city government.
