The Beta Group for the Protection of Migrants will increase its efforts to assist migrants headed from Mexico into the United States during the winter, the National Migration Institute, or INM, said this week.

Temperatures along the Mexican-U.S. border can drop to -10 C during the winter, endangering migrants and requiring additional resources for rescue operations, the INM said in a statement.

Beta units have assisted 176,883 migrants who tried to cross rivers, mountains and desert areas in 2015, rescuing 3,144 people who faced extreme danger, the INM said.

Officials have deployed Beta units in nine states across Mexico to assist lost and at-risk migrants, providing them with transportation to hospitals and shelters, water, food, clothing and other items, the INM said.

Beta units' members are equipped with binoculars, GPS devices, life jackets, stretchers, underwater cameras, airboats, ambulances, ATVs and SUVs.

Officers are trained in first aid, search and rescue, and lifesaving techniques.
