Buggy Rides Aims to Be a Greener, More Inclusive 'Mexican Uber' Agencia EFE

Buggy Rides, a service that puts passengers in contact with drivers by means of a mobile app, was invented in Mexico with a double objective – to be more of an everyman’s taxi service and help reduce the capital’s horrendous traffic jams, according to Director General Bernadette Lara.

“Our difference in the market is that you can pay with a credit card or a prepaid card. With your user number and a bar code you can recharge your card at convenience stores with from 50 to 200 pesos ($2.92 to $11.70) to order a ride,” Lara told EFE.

In that way, the Mexican company that started up last November plans to penetrate the market segment that doesn’t have bank accounts. In Mexico that segment represented some 53 percent of the population in 2012, according to the IT firm Tecnocom.

Buggy Rides also makes use of a “collaborative economy” by “putting to work cars that would otherwise remain parked all day or even all night,” Lara said.

The premise is simple: A vehicle used, for example, by an office employee to get to work in the morning and return home in the afternoon is taken over by a Buggy Rides driver during all the hours in between.
