High levels of environmental pollution in the Mexican capital forced authorities to cancel the mass festivities scheduled by the Federal District government.
The Environmental Commission of the Mexican Capital (Came) keeps the Regional Environmental Precontigency for the second consecutive day in the northeastern Mexico Valley, due to the high concentrations of particles suspended in the atmosphere.
Due to that, the Environment Secretariat announced the cancellation of the First Christmas Night Walk, which consisted of a 13-kilometer route along the Chapultepec Forest, Paseo de la Reforma and Avenida Juarez.
The big ice rink was also temporally closed in Zocalo, the historic center of the city, which is visited by hundreds of Mexican families every day.
The commission said that the high level of pollution was caused by fireworks during Christmas celebrations and a fire in the Cuauhtemoc delegation, where three firefighters were injured.
The fire damaged houses, stores and a school. A new fire, the third in less than 24 hours, was reported in San Jose, in southern part of Central de Abasto, in the Iztapalapa delegation.
