Police Make No Effort to Stop Killings in Mexican City, Activist Says La Prensa

The killings of five civilians in different attacks in recent days in Chilapa, a city in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, highlight police inaction in an area plagued by drug trafficking, community activist Jose Diaz said Monday.

"There are two groups fighting for control of the turf and no one from these groups has been captured, the organizations remain intact. The Rojos and the Ardillos continue operating without any problems, and the Federal Police, in charge of security, is also intact," Diaz told Radio Formula.

"No clashes or captures" have occurred since federal security forces were deployed in the area earlier this year, Diaz, spokesman for the grassroots Siempre Vivos organization, said.

"The ones suffering the consequences are the ones caught in the middle, the ones who get in the way (of the drug traffickers), because among themselves (with the police), there's no aggression," Diaz said.

Two attacks occurred, one on Saturday and another on Sunday, in downtown Chilapa, where the Los Ardillos and Los Rojos gangs have been fighting for control of the area.
