Residential electricity rates will be cut by 2 percent on Jan. 1 and kept at the new level for the entire year, the Mexican Finance Secretariat said.

"It is important to remember that residential electricity rates were also reduced by 2 percent in 2015, so that households will pay 4 percent less in 2016 than they paid in 2014," the secretariat said in a statement.

Electric rates, adjusted for inflation, "will fall around 10 percent in real terms during those two years," the secretariat said.

The rate cut benefits 33 million households.
