Next week, the First Criminal Chamber of the Guerrero Superior Court will rule on an appeal presented by Nestora Salgado's legal defense. Her lawyer Leonel Rivero said that if the decision is favorable, "it will open legal channels for her release."

During an interview conducted in the midst of several forms of support for the release of the former coordinator of Olinalá Community Police, Rivero said that because of this pending decision, Salgado has decided to postpone the hunger strike she was scheduled to begin in the first minutes of this year. Rivero explained:

"She believes that she is facing an opportunity that has not presented itself for a long time ... so she decided to postpone the strike, while waiting for this resolution, which we believe will be handed down next week."

Rivera added that they hope the decision will be issued next Wednesday. On Monday - once the Court returns from the vacation period - he expects to ask for a meeting with Robespierre Robles Hurtado, the new president of the Superior Court.

Leonel Rivero pointed out that the court's decision would have a ripple effect on legal processes weighing on Nestora Salgado, currently imprisoned in Tepepan Women's Social Rehabilitation Center after her arrest on August 21, 2013, on kidnapping charges, when she was sent to the federal maximum security prison in Tepic, Nayarit.
