“Let 2016 be prosperous”, is Enrique Peña Nieto’s wish for the Mexican people. An unrealistic desire, a fictional desire, a fake desire, a desire for himself, his friends and his privileged group of businessmen, wealthy citizens, millionaires, officials and politicians.

There cannot be “prosperity” in Mexico, because it is Peña Nieto’s government itself which has been responsible for sinking the citizens’ economy and of sending this country to a special place in the Third World.

We are a country of poor people: 55 million poor, more than half of the population. The PRI [Party of the Institutional Revolution] government has taken it upon itself to create a factory of poor people. Every day, at ever greater acceleration, thousands of people fall into that black hole of poverty, without remedy, without hope.

This government has been unable to reduce poverty; on the contrary, this government has increased it. And no wonder, the price index bears no relationship to the wages paid by thousands of exploitative business people who strive to accumulate wealth. This, thanks to the pact not to increase wages which the State and unions made with the employers. The workers' purchasing power gap is 100 percent.

It's amazing that despite the overwhelming reality, Peña Nieto wants to sell us a message of “prosperity”. He said in his end of year speech:

“Our country is destined to be one of the most prosperous nations, with the best welfare for its people, and a great reference for the world. Today, more than ever, we must believe in Mexico.”

Believe in Mexico? Of course we believe in the potential of civil society to change this country, but we must not confuse “Mexico” with the government. What many of us do not believe in is this corrupt and exploitative government. Period.
